  • when the light hits just right

    analogue film & photography

    festival

    May 29th - August 8th 2021

  • when the light hits just right

When light particles come in contact with light-sensitive emulsion, an image of that light is recorded. After processing, what was at first a latent image, becomes visible. The festival 'when the light hits just right' shows where the magic of this alchemic process is coming from. The festival is spread out over a three month period, and filled with an exhibition, workshops, online conversations, a conference, film screenings and live cinema performances. A publication shares the thoughts of all the participants.

The invited artists have either been a guest of Filmverkstaden in the past ten years or are active members of the association. The works on display all have their origin in the analogue media of photography or film. They show that analogue film and photography are beautiful, robust and physical media that keep the light within their fabric and hold in their emulsion the imprint of time.

At the same time, these works expand our notion of what film and photography is or can be and provide us with a new way of experiencing them.

  • conversations.

As a prelude, Mike Sperlinger has moderated conversations connecting analogue practitioners in the Baltic/Nordic region with those elsewhere, taking place in advance of the conference for When the Light Hits Just Right.

Mike Sperlinger speaks to two artists with long-standing engagements with analogue photography and film: Paul Kuimet (based in Tallinn, Estonia) and Malena Szlam (based in Montreal, Canada). They discuss how they began working with celluloid, the blurry boundaries between analogue and digital, editing in your head, the economies of distribution, and what keeps them committed to these formats despite all their practical challenges.

    analogue fidelity.

Mike Sperlinger speaks to three filmmakers involved in organizing screenings and public events based around analogue film: Ieva Balode and Lāsma Bērtule (both members of the Baltic Analogue Lab and organisers of the Process Festival in Riga, Latvia) and Mark Toscano (archivist at the Academy Film Archive, Los Angeles, U.S. and host of ‘Remains To Be Streamed’ on Instagram). They discuss the conditions for screening analogue work in the age of covid-19 and (hopefully) beyond, their formative encounters with analogue, their communities and audiences, the performative aspects of projection, the importance of imperfection, and possible hybrid digital-analogue futures.

The topics of the conference will span the past, present and future. An overview of the history of experimental analogue film in Finland will show us where and how things began, where things originated from. In the panel about Distribution of experimental film and expanded cinema, the status quo is discussed and evaluated. In the last panel Analogue Futures, we will direct our view to the times to come to see what is needed to sustain these art forms in the future.

    Contact printing on a Steenbeck!

with Richard Tuohy and Dianna Barrie (AUS)

    18-19th of July 2021

Contact printing 16mm is a pretty powerful thing to be able to do!

It's very handy to be able to make duplicates. But furthermore contact printing can also be part of the creative process in making films. In this workshop we will explain how to use a Steenbeck editing table as a contact printer.
