Contact Printing on a Steenbeck
with Dianna Barrie & Richard Tuohy (AUS)
July 18-19th 2021, 11 am- 5 pm
Contact printing on a Steenbeck!
Contact printing 16mm is a pretty powerful thing to be able to do! It's very handy to be able to make duplicates. But furthermore contact printing can also be part of the creative process in making films.
In this 2-day workshop we will explain how to use a Steenbeck editing table as a contact printer. This is not what they were meant for, but as it happens the results you can get from a Steenbeck or other flat bed film editor can be at least as good as those made by a purpose built printer.
Instead of using the original editing table lamp, we will use a variable red, green and blue LED light controlled by a miniature computer controller (an Arduino). This will allow us to tune the printing light for the right exposure. Indeed, we will be printing on both black and white print stock as well as colour print stock, so the RGB light will also help us fine tune the colours of the light to get correct looking prints!
Yes, this workshop will be conducted in Filmverkstadens dark room with Richard and Dianna internationally by zoom, all the way from Australia. We will have a duplicate setup here as you have there so will be able to work through it together.

Flat Print
with Xavier Quérel (FR)
August 10th 2021, 11 am- 5 pm
Flat print workshop
You love 16mm film but don’t have any camera and you’re fed up with scratching black film or drawing on clear leader?
This workshop is for you.
Let’s follow the foot prints of Man Ray…
Easy technic, nice result.
We’ll work under the red light in the lab. On a table, we’ll lay down a strip of raw B/W film. Then we’ll place different objects or materials on it. Pass over it a torch light to expose the film. Clean it and go directly in the developer, water and fix. Wash, dry, splice as a loop and load the projector.
We’ll discover the prints of the objects on a black background. They will be white or grey wether they completely cut the light or filtered it.
When we’ll have few loops each, we can practice a bit of free improvisation film projection together (this will be limited to the number of 16mm projectors we’ll have).
I will not provide any objects or materials to place on the raw film strip. So, think about it, let your imagination run free, and bring your own!
Man Ray used nails, pins and thumbtacks on 35mm. It can be salt, pepper, other small vegetal, dust. Wide mesh fabric. Etc, etc, etc…
Do not forget that the film strip is only 16mm large, very small is beautiful!
Workshop will be held in English at Filmverkstaden.
